1984 stellte Minolta seine vollautomatische Kompaktkamera Minolta AF-E vor. In Minoltas Produktreihe von 1984 (bestehend aus AF-C, AF-S und AF-Sv) war es die „Volkskamera“ mit einfachem Laden, automatischem Blitz und einem weniger fortschrittlichen 1:3,5 f=35 mm Objektiv mit Fokussierung durch ein aktives Infrarot-Autofokussystem.
